Our hallmark project is LYING in BED – The Play, a two-act, annual event for adult audiences is returning to the stage in 2013. It’s Attitude & Gratitude, Coincidences (or the absence thereof), Sex & Gender, Sexuality & Friendship. All of that, PLUS it’s fun, funny (and potentially educational).
This edgy and provocative, promoting health and healthy communication with the one you love. Ironic. Familiar, yet enlightening.
WHAT’S YOUR TRUTH WHEN YOU’RE LYING IN BED? [LYINGinBED@SexPositiveWorks.com]
Calls for auditions are twice yearly in summer and winter. Shows are in the Atlanta area, typically during Valentine’s week; however, full sponsorships may be negotiated at or around $8,000 + travel for ten, for weekend performances outside of the Atlanta Metro Area.
In the Spring of 2011, Cole Thomas wrote LYING in BED and that fall, with the help of some fellow artists, auditioned and selected the cast members. With Director TeeJay Johnson at the helm and Media sponsorship from Curve Magazine LYING in BED -The Play, had an wonderful run during Valentine’s week 2012 in the Atlanta Metro Area.
LYING in BED -The Play is Playwright/Producer Cole Thomas 1st effort on stage as both. Fundraising is still the greatest challenge we face in these lean times, and yet we know that art patrons will keep art alive even during the toughest of times by contributing and coming out to support our efforts.
LYING in BED, provides stimulating “EDUtainment” by blending dramatic & comedic monologues & sketches into a plot about the value & challenges of truth-telling.
It provides clear, accurate messages about medical & psychological matters like healthy conflict & communication between friends and partners; the prevention of Sexually Transmitted Disease, obesity-related illness and certain cancers; & the ways orientation, gender/gender presentation matter (or don’t) in pursuit of love and loyalty.
The script is written for a largely female cast; yet is adaptable to other types of casts across a wide range of age, sexual and gender orientations, and ethnicities. Plans are in the making for the performance of male (including transmale) version of the show for fall 2013.
The beauty of LYING in BED -The Play is that, by design, cast experience ranges from novice to professional. The first run paid homage to black women in and after relationships, revealing some of the fascinating dynamics within chosen family, too.
For 2013 the producer is searching for venue sponsors in both Dekalb, Fulton and Gwinnett Counties in Georgia, and looking to branch out geographically over the US East coast, and Midwest by 2014 and the Gulf coast and West coast by 2015.
International performances will require international patronage. 2016/17, we’re off!
Each year, new Directors/Cast members may be extended the opportunity to put their spins on the script.
